Penguins Prospect Selected to AHL All-Star Game
USA TODAY Sports

PITTSBURGH – Pittsburgh Penguins top goalie prospect Joel Blomqvist is putting together a great season in his first full year in North America. Backstopping the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins with an 11-4-2 record, Blomqvist was selected to the 2024 AHL All-Star Classic.

Blomqvist is the only player from the WBS Penguins to make the All-Star Classic, but it’s a deserved nod. The record speaks for itself and in 19 games played, he has put up a 2.16 goals against average and .920 save percentage.

At the age of 22, Blomqvist has quickly turned into the Penguins top goalie prospect after being drafted in the second round of the 2020 NHL Draft. He doesn’t have any NHL but was recalled to the Penguins pro roster to serve as backup in early November.

Blomqvist impressed during the Penguins’ 2023 professional training camp and subsequent preseason matches. He stood out as a top goalie during the Penguins stint in the annual prospect challenge, as well.

The Penguins see a bright future in Blomqvist and if he continues to trend, he could quickly become a regular at the NHL level. Playing really well at the AHL and earning a spot as an All-Star will only grow his credibility with the organization.
